Coretta Scott King visited India in January 1969, a scant nine months after her husband, Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. Today the Internet says that Mrs. King came to accept an award on behalf of her late husband. I remember a different story - that U.S. Ambassador and Mrs. Chester Bowles, long-time supporters and friends of the Kings, invited Coretta out to India as a respite from the turmoil following Martin's murder. Whatever the reason, she came, and apparently asked to meet with students from the Embassy school. I don't remember what was said, but it was a nice moment, with great dignity, and quiet passion.
